Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine

Dr Brain Harrisberg
Christopher S. Raffo, M.D.

Dr. Christopher Raffo is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon in practice in the Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C., who specializes in the care of adult and pediatric athletic injuries. Dr. Raffo practices at Maryland Orthopedic Specialists with offices in Bethesda and Germantown, a practice he co-founded in 2009. The practice features many convenient features, such as on site diagnostic x-ray, on-site casting and bracing, a team of dedicated physical therapists, and easy access to appointments. Maryland Orthopedic Specialists is a division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopedics, the regions largest and most diverse musculoskeletal providers.

Dr. Raffo is also board certified in Sports Medicine, a certification offered only to board-certified orthopedic surgeons that are fellowship trained and have a predominantly sports medicine practice. The additional board certification ensures that patients are being treated by an orthopedist with a true sports medicine focus, and the advanced arthroscopic skills that are required for modern minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Raffo completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital. As chief resident, he assisted in the care of the Georgetown Hoyas, the Washington Redskins, DC United, and numerous area high school teams. He completed an additional year of fellowship training in advanced arthroscopic (minimally invasive) techniques for shoulder and knee surgery, at the prestigious New England Baptist Hospital, a Harvard affiliate hospital. During that year, he assisted with the care of the Tufts University, Harvard University and Northeastern University sports teams, and was the assistant team physician for the Boston Celtics. The fellowship also emphasized total care of the athlete, from the weekend warrior to the elite level.

As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Raffo is trained in advanced arthroscopic techniques of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. He has a special interest in arthroscopic shoulder procedures, all-arthroscopic treatment of rotator cuff tears and instability, and arthroscopic treatment of ligamentous, meniscal and cartilage disorders of the knee.

Dr. Raffo is currently the team physician for several area high schools, including Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg. Quince Orchard became the first area public high school to have an on-site athletic trainer (ATC) and was the first to implement mandatory concussion testing for the athletes. He was the head team physician for the Catholic University Cardinals from 2008-2014.

As a Sports Medicine Surgeon, a major component of care is directing athletic rehabilitation. He works with a superb team of therapists to direct the care of both surgical and non-surgical injuries. The therapists are experts in their fields, and treat all patients with dignity and care.
